The New Vauxhall Corsa GSi Will Have A 148bhp 1.4

Vauxhall has confirmed the powertrain for its incoming Corsa GSi, and released some performance figures
The New Vauxhall Corsa GSi Will Have A 148bhp 1.4

If you want a small, hot-ish hatchback, there’ll soon be option that isn’t a Suzuki Swift Sport. It’s called the Corsa GSi, and it was announced a little while ago - it’s just that Vauxhall/Opel has been painfully slow at releasing any information about it.

Now though, we know what kind of engine it’ll be packing: a turbocharged 1.4-litre inline-four turbo - the exact same configuration as the aforementioned Swift Sport, as it happens. It’s a little more powerful too at 148bhp (it’ll have 162lb ft of torque, meanwhile), but since the Corsa is a much porkier car than the lithe Suzuki, it’s a tad slower: 0-62mph takes a relatively leisurely 8.9 seconds. The top speed is 128mph.

As revealed a few weeks ago, it’ll marry this modestly-powered engine with the chassis from the Corsa VXR or Corsa ‘OPC’ as it’s referred to on Opel-badged cars.

So, this is a car that’ll be all about you exploiting a meaty suspension and brake setup to keep up as much momentum as possible. And that’s quite appealing, in a way, particularly as the target audience of younger drivers will have some vague hope of insuring it.

What could be less appealing is the price: the general consensus seems to be that it’ll weigh in at £18,000 - £19,000, pitching it into battle with the much more powerful, spectacularly capable Fiesta ST. Hmmm…

Is the engine coming from psa or is vauxhall not linked to the group?

iirc PSA doesn’t have a 150hp-ish 1.4 engine

Vauxhall and opel are owned by psa. I guess it is the same 1.4 turbo engine as I have in my Corsa E. So it’s good for 170 bhp with a remap :)

A shame that we can’t have these cars in America, they could be cheap fun but there isn’t a demand for small cars with small engines over in the States

That is correct. Americans for some reason don’t want city cars…

You could just get a Fiesta ST instead then 😂

Trust me, you don’t want a Corsa. Handles like a boat compared to most of the cars in its class. The Fiesta is the small car you want.

I like my corsa and I think it handles pretty nice. Not as nice as a Fiesta ST but better than a Polo imo (the Polo is more comfy though)

Its still a Corsa, I wouldn’t be surprised if it handles as miserably as the standard car.

Replacement?! It has 50hp less!

This isn’t a replacement for the VXR. GSI is the vauxhall/opel equivalent of SEAT’s “FR” line of cars; warm hatch.

And you don’t need 148bhp on a hatchback

This engine was already sold here in Germany, idk about other countries, but it’s not new. The other thing is that I can guarantee you that the GSi will reach 60 mph in less than 8.9 seconds, it will probably be around 7 seconds. It’s the same for my engine: I got the 1.4T with 101 hp and Opel claims a 0-60 time of 11 seconds but it’s easy to go way under that (~9 seconds) and I’m obviously not a pro driver.
