Watch The Trailer For ‘The Lionheart’, A New Documentary About Dan Wheldon

We love a good racing documentary, and we’re about to be treated to a new one from HBO. The Lionheart will look at the life of the late IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon, and the legacy he leaves behind.

Born in Buckinghamshire, Wheldon cut his teeth in various British junior championships before heading to the US in 1999 to climb the American open-wheel racing ladder. He made it to IndyCar (then known as the Indy Racing League) in 2002, where he went on to quick success, winning the championship in 2005 and the flagship Indianapolis 500 in 2005 and 2011.

Sadly, a few months after that second 500 win, in October 2011, Wheldon was competing in IndyCar’s Las Vegas race when he was involved in a massive multi-car accident that took his life at the age of 33. He was survived by his wife Susie and sons Sebastian and Oliver, both of whom have since pursued racing careers of their own, with now 15-year-old Sebastian set to race in USF Juniors this season, the first rung on the IndyCar ladder.

As well as looking at Dan’s life and career, it looks like The Lionheart will examine the legacy he left behind, and how both his life and death have affected his family and his sons’ racing careers.

From the trailer, we can see interviews with the Wheldon family as well as competitors and teammates like Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan and Scott Dixon. IndyCar team owners Michael Andretti and Chip Ganassi will also appear.

The Lionheart will debut on streaming service HBO Max on 12 March. Currently, Max isn’t available in the UK without the use of a VPN, so we hope it’ll pop up on another service at some point to get Wheldon’s story out to as wide an audience as possible.
